Make Integrity The Cornerstone Of Your Personal Brand - Work It Daily
Make Integrity The Cornerstone Of Your Personal Brand - Work It Daily I read an article in SUCCESS Magazine a while back called â5 Tips for Creating a Powerful Personal Brand.â A powerful personal brand is the first step in creating positive personal impact â" a key ingredient to your career success mix. Related: 6 Easy Steps For Building A Defined Personal Brand The article listed five keys to a successful brand⦠Brand yourself through your professional presence. Brand yourself as a valued partner. Brand yourself with strong communication skills. Brand yourself by staying one step ahead. Brand yourself as being social savvy. I agree with all five of these common sense personal branding tips. But I have one additional common sense personal branding tip to add: Brand yourself as a person of integrity. Tweet 62 in my career advice book Success Tweets says⦠âYour personal brand should be unique to you, but build on integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking.â According to Wikipedia, âIntegrity is consistency of actions, values, methods, measures and principles.â Integrity and consistency are intertwined. People who are consistent in their actions are seen as people with a high degree of integrity. Oprah says, âReal integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobodyâs going to know whether you did it or not.â This is true. If you practice situational ethics â" doing the right thing only when youâre in the public eye â" you arenât really a person of high integrity, youâre just pretending to be one. Besides, itâs hard to act one way in public, and another in private. So, to be safe, follow Oprahâs advice. Do the right thing because itâs the right thing to do â" not because youâll get credit, or avoid getting into trouble. John Maxwell is a well-known business author. One of his books sends the same message. Itâs called, Thereâs No Such Thing As Business Ethics: Thereâs Only One Rule for Making Decisions. According to John, that rule is the Golden Rule: âDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.â In other words, do the right thing. Thereâs a practical side to this, too. Mark Twain once said, âIf you tell the truth, you donât have to remember anything.â In other words, if youâre always a person of high integrity, itâs easy to be a person of high integrity; there are no complicating factors â" like remembering what you did or said in a given situation. Polonius gave similar advice to Hamlet, âTo thine own self be true, and it must follow as the day the night, thou canst be false to no man.â My father-in-law, Roy Blackman, passed away a few years ago. This quote was his epitaph. It was on the program handed out at his funeral. Roy embodied it in how he lived his life. It was the only piece of advice he gave his grandson, Matt, as he went off to college. Oprah, John Maxwell, Mark Twain and Shakespeare are all in agreement on one common sense piece of career advice. If you want to brand yourself as a person of high integrity act as a person of high integrity all the time â" not just when it suits you, or when someone might notice. What I Wish Id Known Before Quitting My Job To Freelance
What I Wish Id Known Before Quitting My Job To Freelance I started my professional career in corporate American, and have always thought that thats where it would end or at least last for a few decades. Earlier this year, after 7 years in marketing, I decided to take the plunge and turn my 3-year blogging hobby into a full-time business. This welchesnt a decision I came to overnight. Many information interview and case studies, much mental preparation and financial preparation led to this weighty decision that affects me, my career, my family, and my husbands world. So, in many ways, I welches prepared for the irregular income, lifestyle adjustment (no more shopping budget), the test on my time management and self-motivation skills, and lastly, the lack of every day coworker chats. Before I quit my 9-5 job, I spent a lot of time crafting what my eventual everyday work schedule would be like and define weekly and monthly goals that Id like to achieve. I thought in every way I was prepa red. And in some ways, I was as prepared as I possibly could have. There are things in life that without experiencing it firsthand, you will never thoroughly understand. After almost 4 months of the freelancing, full-time-blogging life, I have definitely noticed a few things about the freelancing life that I wasnt anticipating. Here is a list of things, despite my preparation and research, I wish I had known before I quit my job to freelance1. Nothing happens if you do nothing all day and just watch TV.Really. You should try it. I certainly did. And at the end of a day with 5-8 hours of TV watching, no one yelled at me or checked in on me with a what the hell did you do look on their face and I wish that was the end of it. My conscience and guilt would not shut up and they basically personified and yelled at me for the lack of productivity. It scared me.2.It becomes just a bit harder to explain what you do.When you order coffee at a hip caf on a Tuesday morning at 1030 AM, dressed in yoga pants and a t-shirt, and people ask you so are you in school?. The first time it happened, there was a moment of awkward silence because my thoughts went from aww, they think Im still in school to wait, but how do I explain what I actually do. And when I explain that I work from home and work on my blog, then these questions inevitably follow oh, what is your blog called and do you have a lot of followers? with the first being much easier to answer than the second. I was not prepared.3.Work-related stress and anxiety take on entirely new meanings. The stress and anxiety I feel these days are caused by abstract and intangible things like my self-imposed goals and lack of productivity. I cant say that I will choose the corporate company kind of deadline over this yet (although it could change) but its surely a different kind of stress that I havent experienced before.4.Personal to-dos and work-related to-dos start to merge.Because I now work from home, many things that I have to complete for the day start to blend together. Complete 2 blog posts and finish laundry are side by side on my to-do list. It was a big problem for me initially. The system I developed to combat this issue is to divide my to-do lists into a home life category and a work-life category. This way, I know how much progress I am making in each perspective areas.5.Youre the only person that is responsible for progress and meeting goals. This sounds pretty self-evident and like something you would naturally expect. But when you have no performance review, weekly 11s, 3 layers of management on top of you and all of their expectations for your greatest performance, things are a little different. In psychological terms, instead of extrinsically motivated, you have to be intrinsically motivated. As it turned out, switching gears in the way I find motivation has been harder than I anticipated.6.Is Water cooler conversation important to you?As I alluded to at the beginning of this post, I was expe cting this to be a big change in the social aspect of my work life. I understood how things would change. What I hadnt realized was how seriously it was going to affect me. I am an inherently social person. I have found social influence to be stronger than financial influence in terms of what motivates me. Lets put it this way, if you paid me $100 to go to an event, I will go. But if you told me that 3 of my friends are going to the event, Id go for free. I thought when I transitioned to freelance on my own, my clients, other entrepreneur friends, and friends that worked from home could all be my social network through the internet. But the internet is still the internet, and social interactions IRL person has proven to be irreplaceable.Ultimately, your lifestyle, personality/maturity, and financial position have to all align in order for this transition to be meaningful and productive. And dont be surprised if you find yourself missing your old work structure, co-workers, deadlines , even meetings.--Jessica is a writer, a digital marketer, social media aficionado and a lifestyle blogger atCubicle Chic.Through her writing, Jessica aims to connect with fellow corporate 9-5ers who may be bound by an office physically but crave for much more in life. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. C apitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Find a Career in Fine Art Restoration or Conservation
Find a Career in Fine Art Restoration or ConservationFind a Career in Fine Art Restoration or ConservationThe fields of fine species restoration and species conservation share similar goals, but they involve different approaches and methods. Art restorers clean the artwork to try to bring it back to its original condition as the artist had intended, whereas art conservators research, document and try to prevent further damage to the artwork. Although the two jobs have different aims, there is some overlap in the technical expertise required to restore and conserve artworks. Job Prospects There is a wide range of jobs for both art restorers and art conservators. For art restorers, jobs include restoring murals and mosaics at onsite locations, repairing broken ceramics, and cleaning paintings in galleries or museums. Art conservators may also be part of a museums full-time staff, in charge of the museums collection of artworks, or they may work independently. In a conservation depa rtment, a conservator uses high-tech scientific tools such as Raman spectroscopy and an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Education Traditionally, in the past, restorers apprenticed with masters to learn the tools of the trade. Skills and techniques may have also been passed down through generations of a family of restorers. These days, however, with the latest high technology, many restorers and conservators attend university or institutional conservation programs to learn such cutting-edge techniques and to even learn some ancient skills. If you are interested in becoming a fine art restorer or conservator, there are art conservation programs all around the world. Of particular note is theUniversity of Delaware Art Conservation Department, which has offered undergraduate, masters, and doctoraldegrees in art conservation since the 1970s. Students get to work in a museum that has 25 studios in which to learn the craft and technology.

Magnetically Repelling Ice
Magnetically Repelling Ice Magnetically Repelling Ice Magnetically Repelling IcePeople can be nervous fliers to begin with. Even when there isnt a cloud in the sky, there are few words that cause anxiety in some like, Prepare for takeoff. But add wintry conditions to the mix, add some ice, and the uneasy feeling can turn to fear. Now, a University of Houston team wants to help calm nerves, as well as increase safety, by preventing the harmful effects of icewith the aid of magnetic forces, of all things.Icy conditions are a dicke bretter bohren mssen in nature and industry, says Hadi Ghasemi, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston. I was in Canada and doing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in mechanical engineering. Its a serious problem over there. You couldnt open up a door of a car sometimes with ice building up, icing on airplanes. Even your air conditioner in homes has problems. I was constantly around these issues. In my group, we looked a t different approaches of nanotechnology for these problems and started to look at the problem of ice. At the same time, working with this magnetic fluid, I saw a possible solution and thats why I started this research in my group I think around a year ago.For now, the creation is simply called a magnetic slippery surface and is made of two components. The first is magnetic tape. This tape can be put on any surface, whether polymer, metal, et cetera. he says. The second component is ferrofluid, which he says is basically a mixture of fluid and magnetic nanoparticles, the latter being on the order of 5 to 10 nanometers in diameter.A demonstration shows water rolling off of new icephobic surface. Image University of HoustonThe ultimate idea was that this combination would make koranvers ice never encounters a solid to cling to.Looking at a water drop mixing with a solid, it showed a strong bond has adhesion strength on the order of 100,000 pascals. That led to us asking How do we avoi d this interface? he says. When ice builds up and has contact with a solid then it has a very solid bond and is very hard to detach, he says. When cold weather sits on a fluid surface, this combination of magnetic tape and ferrofluid doesnt allow the ice to see the solid and it just floats on the surface. Adhesion strength with this invention is 2 pascals, according to Ghasemi. I was definitely surprised it worked this well, that it could go this low. One of his goals, he says, is for it to be used in spray form.Ghasemi has enjoyed the process, particularly working with students to bring this invention to light. I came up with the idea but they have been critical in testing and so much more, he says. Its fun to see us moving this forward.Considering how many airline accidents and mishaps have been ice-related over the years, he hopes this will help avoid tragedy in the future. There has been strong enthusiasm from industry, he says. Im optimistic about its future.Eric Butterman is a n independent writer. For Further Discussion
